THE JEWELLERY OF THE DRY AREAS
MELIA VOLKENSII a trees belonging to Meliaceae family, usually grows to upto 20 meters in height. Some of the local name of the species include;
Boran (Bamba); Digo (Kirumbuta); Kamba (Mukau); Kikuyu (Mukau); Samburu (Maramarui); Somali (Bamba); Taita (Kirumbutu); Taveta (Mkowe); Tharaka (Mukau).
Somehow, the species is an oddity in that it is able to grow fast and produce a high-value timber in quite dry areas.
Putting into consideration that it has a high quality timber, reaches maturity relatively faster, it is termite resistant and ability to grow in dry areas, the tree is a jewellery of the dry areas which need to be capitalized on.
